June 6, 2001 <br /> <br /> To: Members of the County Planning Commission <br /> Chris Yuen, Planning Director <br /> Re: Redesignate the North Kohala Coastline to Conservation and Open <br /> <br /> Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, <br /> We respectfully submit for your review some of the documents (to protect and preserve the <br /> North Kohala Coastline) that we as a community have submitted to different levels of <br /> government, spanning over 12 years. <br /> We have included some maps of the North Kohala coastline showing the locations of <br /> hundreds of ancient pre-contact sites. Also included are the actual drawings showing just the <br /> ancient sites between Honoipu Landing and Kapa'a Beach Park. <br /> All of the Ali'i Nui, including Alapai, Kalaniopu'u and Kamehameha the Great, used the <br /> North Kohala Coastline to provision and train their warriors before leaving for other islands in <br /> the hawaiian chain. A thousand or more canoes came to the North Kohala Coast during these <br /> ancient periods from Ka'u and Kona, Puna and Hamakua; occupying the North Kohala leeward <br /> coast all the way around to Kauhola Point on the North Kohala windward coast. Provision and <br /> Warriors came from the entire North Kohala coast, including Pololu, Honokane and Awini <br /> Valleys. <br /> The North Kohala Coastline is historically and culturally very important to West Hawaii, the <br /> County and the State of Hawaii. <br /> We sincerely hope that the County Planning Commission and Chris Yuen will redesignate the <br /> North Kohala Coastline to Conservation and Open, so present and future generations of residents <br /> and visitors, will be able to enjoy the magnificent, natural and open view planes that the North <br /> Kohala Coastline provide today. <br /> Sincerely, <br /> Concerned Residents of North Kohala <br /> <br />
