<br /> h ~1j ~p+(~r p~v qy* ~a ry~~y y^e ~qT~~+ ~y ? i~ *p p~ <br /> r'11l'i~ 1i1.~ l~dl'e®y'~rggy~R.e~~+~y®I'r T1YXI~~a~y1y.7®~rV1\g1y~~v ®1`~rYry1~~Y'7~~Tt~ll SIJI~~®10~1~ <br /> 1 ~:7.~'a P oAaAs® ~'i' 11\ lT IS~SA`~e~®~ lJ 1 ~ol\ <br /> WHEREAS, a national boycott against irradiated food has already resulted in the loss of <br /> important markets on the mainland including Marsh's, Keirn's, SBcK and others; and <br /> WI-IE~AS, the nearly 8,000 postcards and letters from People on the mainland have <br /> warned the County of I-Iawaii that they will not buy irradiated fruit from Ilawaii; and <br /> WI-IEREAS, Japan does not allow irradiated fruit into their country, and five consumer <br /> groups fronn Japan have warned that Japanese people will "back away" from all <br /> ~r~~$; and <br /> WI3ERlAS, the FDA has stated that potentially carcinogenic and mutagenic chemicals <br /> are created by the irradiation process at 30 parts per million; and <br /> WI~REAS, irradiation facilities which use cobalt-60 or cesium-137 support, legitirr~ize, <br /> and rely on nuclear power and nuclear weapons production; and <br /> WI-I~1t~AS, these nuclear industries result in the .authorized, non-accidental, random <br /> killing of innocent people including children; and <br /> W~I-IEREAS, these nuclear industries are leaving a horrific legacy of nuclear wastes <br /> products for future generations to deal with; and <br /> WI-I~R~AS, accidents at irradiation facilities, including the I-Iawaii Development <br /> Irradiator, have resulted in radioactive contamination of land and water; and <br /> WI-I~I~AS, food irradiation facilities are allowed to emit 104 millirems of radiation per <br /> year and, under special circumstances, 500 millirems per year; and workers are allowed <br /> to receive 30 to 50 times ~norc radiation per year than one would receive from natural <br /> background radiation; and <br /> Wf~ItEAS, these radiation levels will lead to increased cancers and birth defects; and <br /> WIdEI~AS, as of 1995, the first "food-only" irradiator in the United States, Food <br /> Technology Services Inc., located in Mulberry, Florida, had lost 5.5 million dollars; and <br /> WH.~IZ~AS, Mayor Yainashiro's proposal for $2 million fora "post harvest treatment <br /> facility" does not specify how the money would be spent; <br /> TI~IZl?FD1ZE, we oppose any ordinance or resolution favoring irradiation; and <br /> `I`~-i~1~FCJ, we believe the triost logical and economical solution for agricultural <br /> development in I-Iawaii would be to develop the local markets as a priority, and then, if <br /> necessary, to encourage use of existing treatment facilities, and to export specifically to <br /> coldTclitnate regions, i.e. Canada and the northern United States to prevent spreading the <br /> fruit fly, until ch time as non-toxic disinfestation methods can be developed. <br /> r._ <br /> Signed; ~..~t-~ ?'Z <br /> r <br /> Address: ~~r:i - rNt : - ~ <br /> r <br /> ,y.. <br /> I believe_tk~e $2 million lla~s could be better spent for: <br /> ~ a.... <br /> _..:`ry~v <br /> <br />
