Food irradiation is a bad idea, and I am writing to encourage you to make a
wise decision on Thursday by voting NO on $ill No.62.
Food distributers have already rejected irradiated produce and even more will not order
irradiated produce when they understand exactly how many people like myself would
never buy irradiated produce. We already know that many major food companies
have rejected irradiation, and their ranks will only grow in time.
if Hawaii or any other island in the state invests resources in food irradiation, it will be
investing in a costly albatross (no slander intended to those beautiful birds). Wouldn't
it be fiscally healthier to strategize increased exports of Hawaii's produce to places that
will take is rather than the places that won't? If those opportunities turn out to be so
limited, wouldn't it be better to work with producers to see what other form the
produce can take (perhaps processed in some way--even something as simple as
dr}~ng if that would rid the produce of the fruit flies) so it can be exported?
As with all nuclear technologies, the risk of harming the islands we love so much is
too great. We want a healthy state of healthy people-- our own families--eating
healthy food. Why would we send anything less to other people's families?
Thank you for your courage to shape a o~sidve future for our state and our world--
thankyou for voting NO on Bill No.62.
Mahalo Pleniy,
(,ti~ ~iL~/J'1'LV
O,nrana. bio. ~
p5le Ito.
