April 24, 1997
Hawaii County Council
25 Aupuni Street -`"'1` RECEIVED
I3ilo, Hawaii 96720 Tlirie..._-_-----~--.-- By..-_........_....,:.-°
Date---•---~ G2_....-~.....---°---
County Council ~ p"T~
Dear Councihnembers
I am asking for your support to build an irradiator here on the Big Island.
I am the past Marketing Chairman for the Papaya Administrative Committe, and a concerned
citizen in support of and irradiation treatmem facility.
I have seen the irradiation treatment facility in Tuston, California, and I did drink the water
from the Cobalt 60 water pool. I have also eaten irradiated papayas, strawberries and apples,
and they were very good.
The Big Island is an agricultural county and we need the irradiation facility so we can export
our products.
I was one of the biggest supportors for imadiation ten years ago. At that time the Hawaii
County Council , passed a resolution supporting irradiation, which was sent to the State
Legislature.
For two years I lobbied for that facility and had the money appropriated. Due to one signiature
that was not signed, the money lapsed and went back to the general fund.
Now we have a second chance to build this irradiation treatment facility, don't let this chance

go by again.
The Big Island's econmy is down, and we need this irradiator to help our diversified
agricultural industries.
Thank you for your time, and if you need more information about irradiation, you may
contact me at 959-5553. I191 Oihana Street Kilo, Hi 96720
Sincerely,
Richard T. Sakanashi
F91e Ite.
Ref. TaJ-PrQSer-,tt~ed
F~ C_-----__
Rcf. I?ete~~~'
