Hawaii 96720-4252 <br /> SUBJECT: ISOi~1EDIX CORPO?? <br /> ~,TION <br /> Dear Mayor Yamasbiro: <br /> I have been asked by the Mayor of the Village of Chester, Joseph Battiato, to provide this letter with <br /> some data and background concerning the Isomedix Corp Facility in the Chester Industrial Park of the <br /> Village. <br /> Isomedix made application to the Village of Chester P1an~Ling Boazd during 1991 for aCobalt-60 Gamma <br /> Irradiator Facility. The facility was intended as a processing plant utilized for sterilization of various <br /> items, such as medical supplies (surgical gloves, instruments, bandage dressings, etc.). The facility was <br /> a building approximately 60,000 squaze feet, of which nearly 95% was wazehousing for products <br /> awaiting sterilization, cr already sterilized. The applicatior. rereived immediate attention both from tl"ie <br /> public, as well as the local and regional ne.JS media. Isomecls <br /> submitted a Full Ettv!romnertal Assessment Form, which is an 11 pace document providing general <br /> information concernir_g the application. In their review of ?he Isomedi~L application. the Planning Boazd <br /> considFred potential imparts for traffic, noise; odor, solid waste pmdLLCtion, 1.~*:d distLtrbances, potential <br /> effects on natural resources, potential effects of discharges to air, as well as tht more pLLbi.icized potential <br /> hazard to human health. As Lead Agency for tlLe SEQRA review, the Village Planning Boazd obtained <br /> input and assistance from an involved agency (one which also issues a permit or approval), the New <br /> York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Isomedix was required to obtain an Air <br /> Discharge Permit frcm NYSDEC. As well, if any product discharge was to occur from the plant into <br /> the municipal sanitary sewage collection system, same would also be a NYSDEC issue. <br /> Licensed !n hew Vork.
