I have a problem wRh any residential or iesort developmenf'b'1R~N1 u- H,~!NJ~!I
the
makai side of Queen K that is anywhere neaz the Runway 35 approach.
As I'm sure you know, on the mainland residential development that has
been allowed too close to runway approaches has hindered and limited
airport operations, even closed down smaller airports. The airports were
there for decades before the residences and even though those residents
knew they were buying under a runway approach, they still had the
political
power to hinder the airport operations. Runways at major, busy airports
aze often completely shut down for 8-12 hours a day due to noise
mitigation
measures that have been implemented by law. I believe this already is
true
in Hilo. Luckily Hilo is not that busy this yeaz or this decade.
Please be sure the council understands the logic of how and why an azea
has
a certain zoning designation before it is allowed to be changed. It
requires some digging but may reveal some good reasons to leave the
zoning
as it is.
Just want to be sure there is some long term thinking going on.
Commercial
development seems appropriate, but not residential or resort.
Doubt I would make a public meeting, but you can consider this email
testimony, if that is allowed.
Kathy McMillen
Comm.
