Nies, Program Associate <br /> Re: Marijuana Position Statement <br /> The American Lung Association of Hawaii campaigns against <br /> smoking in any form including cigarettes and cigars, and any <br /> controlled substance such as marijuana, crack cocaine,or crystal <br /> methamphetamine because of the increased risk of lung disease. <br /> Marijuana is a powerful drug that comes from the leaves, flowering <br /> tops, and stems of Cannabis sativa There are over 400 separate <br /> chemicals in marijuana -even more when its burned -which <br /> produce many different effects on the mind and body, especially <br /> the lungs. <br /> Marijuana smoke has 50 percent more cancer causing chemicals <br /> and tars than tobacco smoke Marijuana smokers usually inhale <br /> marijuana smoke deeper and hold it in their lungs longer than <br /> cigarette smokers Marijuana users are also more likely than <br /> tobacco users to smoke the cigarette to the very end.
