BOX 437 9mo..__-- By_'

HOLUALOA, HAWAII 96725 ~O~- ~ T~ ~ / L ~
County Eoundl .
April 24, 2004
Mr. James Arekaki
25 Aupuni St.
Ndo, H-i.
96720
Aloha Chairman Arakaki;
Some time back I addressed a note to each of the councilmen
regarding progress. Without it you wither on the vine. Progress
is imperative, without it you revert or go b~kwards. Hawaii end
tbe Big Ishud in partiouhtr has no choice, we allow growth
to continue. It seems the councils chore is simple, insist it be
done permanent and first class. But, be fair. Leave a little room
for profit. The rational is vay simple, either we must allow other
people to create a broader tax base or the debt becomes those who
already mad heavier and heavies tax bills. in this case I an sayng
a good word for the Cliff Morris project. Whom 1 do not know and
have never met.
Just a short line about tbe selfish demonstrators. They h'ke it fike
it is, deteriorating highways and side roads, public utilities degrading
by tbe day, traffic out of comrol from lack of enough persorrel,
spilled paint on the main and ode streets, tacky conditions that are
allowing Kailua-Kona to be a second Tiajuana, Mexico. The final
resole is the disrespect and lowering of standards all ova the Island.
Here is the proof if arryone needs proof. My forma and only other
home for 60 years was Avalon, Catalina Island. Once the Gem of the
Pacific, famous throughout the world as race place to visit, and known
as tbe'Magic lsle' for summa vacationers. Our streets were swept early
each morning, rnatiaclris strolled the streets. As five steamships a day
arrived to bring to our from door thousands of well dressed woman and
men with plemy of money in their pockets to spend during tbe five hour
stay, a tourists operators dream. Manorial Day to Labor day was the
season. After that everyone hibernated umil Easter Vacation. Some
people advocated we keep up with tbe changing world. But by now a loud
selfish few, aided and abetted by a subsidiary of tbe Wrigley Gum Co.
owners of 73°/q mostly bare land, of our one square mile fair city,
banded together to vero every gairdW effort. Today 2004, the city of Avalon
bps the Federal govemmem for assistance to keep the City above board.
The same vacant land is still vacem, and it is common to find the summer
workers living eight to twenty in a single person dwelling, for lack of
of houaurg Once we kra:w no crime. We simply failed to plan for the
future. What do we have today? Tacky people, traveling in rolling and
tossing small boats, figuratively with only nickels in their pocket. That
is the price you pay for attempting to stifle progress.
Respectively, I urge each of you to show pobtical courage, ignore the
noisy few and look to the future and the kids who will soon be our leaders
and inherit our legacy.
I cannot rosist the following: Numerous Avalon "keep it Quaint" devotees
crow make their home and do business and none hve in the conditions they left.
Guess where ?
/,T/HE_BI~G ISLAND. - l
CO"r"a'~saNad •I
LeslieThuet.
