Richard Merschdorf
75-5816 Lewa Place
Kailua-Kona, Hawaii 96740
May 31, 2004 ~7 s
O
County Council c
Attn: James Arakaki -
25 Aupuni Street _
Hilo, HI 96720
Re: Bill #198 & #199
- t.:'
Dear Mr. Arakaki:
As a resident of Kailua View Estates, I find it very troubling that the County
Council is considering granting approval to the subdivision project, Nani Kona
Aina. This 43 lot subdivision is located at the top of Nani Kailua, the main
thoroughfare through Kailua View Estates. With Nani Kailua as the only outlet
roadway to the Queen Kaahumanu Highway, all additional traffic resulting from
this subdivision will add to this already busy street.
In addition, the developer, Mr. Dan Bolton, has agreed to improve Hienaloli Road
over to Hualalai Road. This would be even more disastrous for our subdivision
as traffic from Hualalai Road would use this road to access Nani Kailua Drive.
Consider this: Hualalai Road is a narrow, windey road that accesses Queen
Kaahumanu Highway at a dangerous intersection with only a stop sign. Nani
Kailua Drive is a straight shot down to Queen Kaahumanu Highway at a traffic
light. Any driver with common sense coming down Hualalai Road is going to go
for the safer and easier drive down Nani Kailua Drive.
This project and its design is a bad idea for all of the residents of Kailua View
Estates. I strongly oppose its approval, and I urge you and your council
members to oppose it.

A final note is that this is not just one subdivision with 43 homes. In addition, the
Gomes proiect (already approved) will add 15 new homes; the Welton proiect
(approved) will add 17 new homes; and at the north end of Kakalina Street, there
are another 12 homes being proposed. This will bring the total of new homes to
87 -all using Nani Kailua Drive.
Sincerely,
Richard Merschdorf G f ~ $ SO
Comm. No.
Ref. To: t
Ref.
