Aburamen. I am the Manager of the Hawaii Intake Service
Center in Downtown Hilo and the Vice-President of the Hilo Downtown Improvement
Association. I would like to take this opportunity to voice my strong support for the
proposal to relocate the Hawaii Community College to Downtown. Our area's well-
being, perceptually and physically, would make great strides in improvement with the
placement of the College in its midst.
Today, Downtown building owners are faced with costly refurbishment of aging
buildings. While, merchants and professionals are not easily enticed to relocate to
Downtown or even justify continuing leases in the area, due to the deteriorating
condition of the buildings and dwindling clientele. The perception that Downtown is a
"dying community" could be laid to rest with the influx of college students, faculty and
administrators and the current "Catch 22" situation resolved.
Such a revitalization of Downtown would increase property values and hence real
property tax revenues for the County. Likewise, the State would realize increased
excise and income tax receipts from expanded commerce and new business start-ups.
The net all result would be increased employment and improved physical and social
conditions in Downtown Hilo, awin-win situation for all. I ask for your support for
this effort to relocated the Hawaii Community College to Downtown.
Sincerely,
Roxanne L. Aburamen
Roxanne L.
