Box 1680 Oct, 5, 2004
Kapaau, HI
96755

Aloha County Council,

Recently I received a letter regarding the fair share contribution on my re-zone application
I understand I have been asked to pay the maximum combined value of $9,671.44. I ask the
County Council to consider the following when making their final decision.
I work as a family center coordinator which only allows for a salary of $14,400 per year. My
lotion business is still in the infancy stages and currently moneys made are reinvested.
Although the family center is a paid position 20 hours per week (counseling abused youth,
substance abuse counseling, relationship and domestic violence help. Assistance with financial
aid for schooling, living and food. Help to make up resumes etc.) I often put in more like 40 plus
hours and I am hoping the County Council will consider some of my many contributions as part
of my Fair Share contribution to this community. I bring many of these contributions up because
they directly relate to the fees I am being assessed such as park and recreational improvements,
police facilities, fire and road improvements. This is a portion of my current involvement Lions
Club active and youngest member. We do trash pick up, collect and clean ghusses, do an annual
blood drive and test children for blindness and hearing disabilities in addition we raise funds for
people in need within our community. Involved at risk youth in providing a dinner for our local
Fire and Police officers. I voluntecr my time to teach art in the public school. I am on the
executive bored for the Coalition Against Drugs and have recently be involved with securing
fmrds for after school programs such as tennis and swimming for or youth. I volunteer as a
conflict resolution counselor at the grade school. I am the committee Chair of the Enforcement
committee, committed to hiring a community police offer and working with them to create a
neighborhood watch program. 1 am the service learning teacher at Project venture and I take at
risk youth to work with service dogs, visiting elderly homes and our local hospitals with the dogs
and youth. Within Project Venture we have also bagged food for the homeless and for our local
seniors. I volunteer with my local Hula Halau to clean the yards of our Kapuna in need we also
provide meals if necessary. I am on the Fiance committee for the Kohala Country Fair (Oct 9th)
a fair designed to bring in monies for use throughout our community. I volunteer to do many
things for the fair, one of the most important is a Keiki ID with police officers so all children in
kohala have the opportunity to receive ID. Most recently I have volunteered to host a arts and
crap after school program at our gym Parks and Roe to provide all ages the opportunity to do
crafts aad art free of charge.
Finally both parties are not out to make money on this menu of land I only wish to have a
place in which I can afford to live. Furthermore I believe I am not a further burden on the
community as I have always lived here ( unlike someone new coming to our town). I plan to
continue both my lotion business and my c:onunitmcnt to making Kohala a better place to live.
My hope is that the County Council will consider reducing or dropping the Fair share
contribution attached to my conditions of rezoning.
Mahalo for your consideration.
Alyssa Ackerman

X omm.
