SAFE COMMUNITY HIGHWAY SAFETY PROGRAM <br /> QUARTERLY REPORT <br /> PROJECT TITLE: HCPD CROSSING GUARD PROGRAM/ PS04-08 (O1-H-01) <br /> Priority Area: I Area: Pedestrian Safety <br /> The goal of this project is to increase pedestrian safety in the 20 school zones serviced by <br /> school crossing guards and amongst senior citizens by providing pedestrian safety <br /> training to 40-school crossing guards and to the various senior citizen groups and senior <br /> citizens island-wide. <br /> 1. Provide two training sessions, one in East Hawaii and one in West Hawaii, consisting <br /> of a two-hour pedestrian safety course to 40 school crossing guards and atwo-hour <br /> senior citizen pedestrian safety course for senior citizen organizations. <br /> 2. Conduct training sessions in August 2004. <br /> 3. Utilize overtime to fund two coordinators for these trainings. <br /> 4. Hawaii County Police Department to fund program after first three years (This is the <br /> third year of the three-year program). <br /> 5. Hawaii County Police Department to provide facilities for training sessions. <br /> 6. School Crossing Guard coordinator or designee will conduct 4 school crossing guard <br /> inspections per month utilizing County funds. <br /> GRANT PERIOD RESULTS <br /> (FINAL REPORT): <br /> • Conducted 61 school crossing guard inspections in the third quarter. Conducted a <br /> total of 224 inspections for the fiscal grant period. <br /> • School Crossing Guard training conducted in East and West Hawaii. Twenty- <br /> nine school crossing guards received atwo-hour training module. <br /> The goal of this grant was to increase pedestrian safety in the 20 school zones serviced by <br /> school crossing guards and amongst senior citizens by providing pedestrian safety <br /> training to 40-school crossing guards and to the various senior citizen groups and senior <br /> citizens island-wide. <br /> Twenty-nine school crossing guards received atwo-hour training mode. Eleven guards <br /> were not trained due to position vacancies or scheduling conflicts. Follow-up training is <br /> continuously conducted with all school crossing guards. 224 inspections of school <br /> crossing guards were completed during the fiscal year. <br /> <br /> The pedestrian training for senior citizens was not completed due to lack of participation. <br /> <br />
