State Scuator Richard 1~1. Matsuura
Srroud DiaMirl • • Slrtlr nl' flnu•nii ~I'~
October 21, 1991 ~ C~LtiYtiL(~ '7I~j C~ 7
It1 . ~4,1~'c
Dear Friends: ~1'L~!14~~C[~ ~,w
~C~ ~c7PYll{fl!
I am taking the liberty of writing to you again because
Hawaii's energy future is at another threshold.
Unfortunately, Alaskan oil production has dropped 50$.
Since 50$ of Hawaii's oil requirements came from Alaska, we
now must qo to the Middle East to make up for the shortfall.
Hawaii's oil needs were also obtained from Indonesia.
From next year, Indonesia will become an importer of oil
! since their oil production has dropped significantly.
~ These recent occurrences only verify my fear that we
will have an oil crisis sooner than we expect and unless we
are prepared for the crisis, all hell will break loose in
Hawaii.
Hawaii was fortunate in the last oil crisis in the mid-
~ seventies because the leaders of the Arab oil cartel did not
i realize that Hawaii was part of the United States. So this
State continued to get its oil supply until one dummy in the
~ State Department informed them that Hawaii was part of the
United States, which resulted in the termination of the oil
i supply and the beginning of our fuel crisis.
~ I have studied all the alternatives for an energy
j source for firm electrical power and geothermal energy is
still our best option. I am not going to repeat the
' advantages of geothermal energy except to ask that you read
the enclosed brochure on geothermal.
' The geothermal developers need our moral support and
' encouragement. I sincerely hope that all of you can extend
a helping hand to them. When one continues to lose great
amounts of money, it is very easy to terminate that project
' and take the losses.
~ i ask for your help because our energy future depends
on them succeeding in harnessing the geothermal energy

1 resource.
