General Plan is No Plan
Beware everyone there is no county general plan. It is being revised from what was
formulated for the last five years. It does not protect our land or our future. We need a
long range master plan. It should be 50 to 100 years plan. Not ] 0 years. We need to put

in the major infrastructure now. We need parks (large ones) and rapid transit (around the

whole island). We need to know where all the roads go and where they are all connected.
We need to know where the forests are, the agriculture lands, the rangelands, the

residential lands, the commercial lands, the schools, the police and fire stations, the

landfills, all the lands that make up the whole island. We need to protect these lands
from being rezoned or changed in the future. We are talking about 100 years from

today. We need to make sure that these lands are protected from bulldozing and stripped

of resources (culturally and physical). We need to know how many cars are going to be

on this island. How many people will be coming? How many roads are going to be

built? How many houses, hotels, golf courses, self storage building, how many strip

malls, fast food, gas stations do we need? Do we have enough water, electricity, sewage

treatment facilities, land fills, grave yards, airports, boat slips? I have been feeling down
for a long time now. I didn't know what it was but now I am able to recognize what it is.
I have been seeing the traffic get out of control, the price of homes and land is ridiculous

high and out of reach for most of us, the cost of living here is always going up, the new
subdivisions being built with no consideration of planning at all. The change of attitudes
of the new arrivals is pathetic, the crowded stores, the lack of service and respect of life.

This place is changing and it is changing too fast. We need to slow it down or we will
not have any control of what will become of this place. We need to be able to have the
power to control the destiny of what Hawaii will become. So far our leadership has let us
down. The amount of new subdivisions in the daily news shows us that the quality of life
will be forever changed. It is the lack of a long range plan that is the main problem of
what will happen. The current County General Plan is no plan. To add insult to injury
the current General plan is going to be revised to make it even less restrictive. We need a
long range master plan. It should be 50 to 100 years plan. We need for everyone to get
involved with this process. We need to be concerned about what is going to happen?
Speak up. Get involved with a community organization. Write to the newspapers, write
to you council person, a-mail you friends, go to community meetings, do something. We
got to protect us from ourselves. What we do is important to us and most importantly to
our kids. Let see if we can make a difference. Let's protect our aina. If we don't do
anything now we will all regret it and be depressed forever.
