I would however like the
councilmembers to know that I strongly support setting monies aside from a dedicated source in order to
purchase lands needed for the public good, for instance more beaches, more parks, more parking near our city
centers, access to recreational areas, etc. Maui and Kauai already have had. the foresight to start accumulating
funds so that when we need to obtain land for the public good there are funds available.
As our population grows we need to protect and preserve our quality of life. Money needs to be allocated in
this ,year's county budget for a land protection fund, and needs to be reconsidered by the Council and
established this year. The mayor's budget submitted to Council currently does not include any funding for land
purchase and protection.
We cannot allow our local lifestyle to be squeezed out-there need to be places for people to surf fish, picnic and
recreate. One example that springs to mind is Hunl's beach, another is buying a lot in Kailua town (perhaps the
long skimpy piece across from Huggo's) so that we can provide more parking for the public. Even creating tiny.
little bits of public land in town will prevent our longtime residents from being displaced by the influx of new
residents and preserve the feel of our island, viewplanes, etc.
Please show courage and foresight by creating a fund that can be used to purchase the public lands we need to
keep Hawaii Island beautiful and free. Everyone needs to be able to enjoy this special place, not only those that
can afford to buy and develop it.
The county should be acquiring precious lands that will always be enjoyed by those who live here and those that
visit. Once the beauty is spoiled, why would tourists want to visit? Land is the best investment the county can
make. Think ahead!
Mahalo nui loa~
Aloha from Lorraine
Lorraine Kohn, Broker (R,ABR,GRI,CRS)
Paradise Found Realty Comm. No. ~ 2y•
Ref. To: FL
r Ref.
