S,~'NT VIA FAX 808961-8912 fir„ 1 ~ i(~i 1 r7 ~ ;
GWEN 1i11BAN
76-6182 ALn DRIVE
?<AILUA-KONA, HI 96740
308-329-1912
14 APRIL2005
SUBJECT: PUAA/SUFFOLK DEVELOPMENT
1 live at the 2-1/2 mile marker on Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona. The idea of a
neighborhood shopping center sounds good but it won't work as intended.
An example of that is the grocery store and restaurant that was located in the
fines. They were not viable and they went out of business. The residents
preferred shopping at the larger facility of Kona Coast Shopping Center.
~'he proposed 250 Low-income rental units would have two or more persons
in each unit going to work and coming home daily. Furthermore, driving to
the supermarket and other errands to obtain goods and services not available
in the proposed shopping center would create more traffic. In addirion, to
the 500 cars a day going and coming, we can anticipate that some of these
tenants would have children that needed to be driven to school Worse yet,
teenagers would be driving their own cars and adding to the impact on both
Queen I<aahumanu and Kuakini highway. On top of all that, the people in
the surrounding areas who would want to come to the proposed shopping
center and its employees would Further negatively affect the traffic. In total,
the result would be dreadful given the highway's current overuse.
THE NECESSITY FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING UNITS IS A SERIOUS
MATTER. HOWEVER. TRYING TO PROV[DE FOR THAT WHEN OUR
ROAD SYSTEM IS ALREADY A DISASTER; 1S FOOLISH AND WOULD
MAKE A BAD SITUATION EVEN MORE DANGEROUS.
This committee must consider the negative impact of hundreds and hundreds
of cars slowing the flow of traffic on Queen K. The fast order of business is
to get the Department of Transportation to understand that years of
negligence have severely impacted this highway. And then, of course, they
must fix it. This committee could be instrumental in achieving that goal.
I AM OPPOSED TO THE REZONING OF THESE PROJECTS UNTIL THE
STATE AND COUNTY GOVERNMENTS PROVIDE ADEQUATE
HIGHWAY INFRASTRUCTURE.
