The costs <br /> associated with this new position such as a computer and supplies are included with this request. <br /> The South Hilo Sanitarv Landfill is currently estimated to reach it's maximum permitted capacity <br /> in early 2006 Unon reachinv the landfill's permitted capacity the youth Hilo Sanitarv Landfill will <br /> cease to accept refuse. Closure of the South Hilo Sanitarv Landfill will require that all solid waste <br /> venerated within the County of Hawaii must be transported to the West Hawaii Sanitarv Landfill <br /> located in Pu'uanahulu. North Kona. <br /> A major objective specified in the Update to the Intevrated olid Waste Management Plan for the <br /> Countv of Hawaii is island-wide diversion of solid waste from landfills by source reduction. reuse. <br /> and recvcling The State of Hawaii has adopted voals of 25% diversion by 1995 and 50% by 2000. <br /> The County's current rate of diversion is less than 20% Additionally. island-wide waste veneration <br /> increased by approximately 17% durinv the last fiscal year <br /> The Division's Recycling Programs section currently consists of one (11 Recvclinv Proerams <br /> Coordinator responsible for overseeinv all Countv waste diversion efforts (includinv but not limted to <br /> Breen waste. scrap metal. traditional recvclables. Beverage Container Lawl and two (21 State Brant <br /> funded Recvclinv Specialist II's (temporarvl responsible for monitorinv Biv Island Beverave Container <br /> Law activities. The Division's Recvclinv Proerams section lacks the ability to adequately monitor <br /> County waste diversion efforts and respond to public information reauests rewarding the availability <br /> of recvclinv. re-use. and source reduction opportunities throughout the Biv Island.
