For Rovisw ? Please Common! p Please Reply ~ Please Reeyole
I have discussed this project with Council Member Pilago on several occasions and have had a
chance to talk to Coundl Member Hoffman about the shortage of classroom space in Nodh Kona 1
know that all three Coundl Members from West Hawaii are concerned with insutfident infrastructure,
overcrowded classrooms, poorty performing school systems and the lack of affordable housing in
Kona.
These are all issues that should have been addressed under previous administr~ions.
Premises have been made by elected officials far throe decades and yet we are suffering from
overcrowded, unsafe two lane roads and highways, Our schools have declined to the point that the
federal govemmertt has begun mandatirg local education policy. During this period of time the majority
of tax money raised in this ceurrty has come from West Hawaii. Unfortunately, the majority of this
revenue has been spent on East Hawaii where there are multi-lane roads and ample infrastnidure.
The low and middle income families have suffered the most in West Hawaii. Since people
Continue to relocate here, whether as retirees or as job seekers, homes are becoming scarcer, and the
roads are tletedorating as traffic corttinues to increase. Because of this trend there is no afforciable
housing in this area. By far the worst part of this situation is the reality that if the County Coundl has
the strength and irrtegrily to approve the zoning charge and support this development, the benefits
wont be realized for several years. ff the County Council does not ad now, the resulting continual
decline will reach a point where it will be come "beyond repair". Income will decline as tourists no
longer want to visit West Hawaii and stt in our traffic.
Today you have in your hands the power to approve the only development currently proposed in
West Hawaii that includes housing, affordable housing, shops and services, parking, and a school.
There is also declared oprn space and recreational fadlities. You need to begin approving well
planned affordable housing projects or we will have no workers to builtl roads or employees to sustain
the tourist industry. Thank you for your cxinsideratiorr at my opinion.
, _
i ' ~ ~ ~ r ~ ' c ~ ~ ~Lrt t S "S Comm. No. ~ ~~p. S~
Ref.
