He was born and raised in Papakolea and lived
in Ewa Beach most of his life until he moved to Puna about 10 years ago. Mr. Safarik stated his
qualificiations are certainly in order and he has a real feel for the needs of Puna, however, he had a little
concern there may be some kind of an issue regarding Kamehameha Schools. Mr. Safarik noted that
component has a huge vested interest and wondered whether Mr. Ah Chong would be able to separate in
his mind issues that would be beneficial to the community but maybe not as beneficial to Kamehameha
Schools. Mr. Ah Chong stated he is a Kamehameha School graduate and what happened was personal.
Mr. Ah Chong noted his wife teaches there and his children attend school there. Mr. Ah Chong stated
whatever is right for the community is what the committee does and he is able to separate himself from
that because it's not about him and it's not about the school -it's about what is right for the community.
In response to Council Member Arakaki's inquiries Mr. Ah Chong stated he lives in Paradise Park and is
building a home in the Kea`au Agricultural Lots. Mr. Arakaki noted that besides the school campus,
Kamehameha Schools doesn't own any other lands because they bought the campus property from
Shipman. Therefore, Mr. Arakaki does not see any conflict as to the planning process regarding (ands
owned by Kamehameha Schools. Mr. Arakaki stated he's known Mr. Ah Chong to be of the highest
ethical character and would be supporting him.
Council Member Safarik pointed out that Bishop Estate owns quite a bit of land in the Puna region, along
Highway 137 in the Wa`awa`a and Pahoa areas.
Your Committee on Planning is in accord with Mayor Kim's appointment of Darren M. Ah Chong to the
Puna District Community Development Plan Steering Committee and recommends his confirmation.
and
avas xoes a&e ~ Respectfully submitted,
ARAKAKI X
HtcA X COMMITTEE ON PLANNING
HOFFMANN X
HOLSCHUH X
IKEDA X
ISBELL X
aACOSSOx X K.
