Communication 912
Council Member Holscuh expressed his appreciation for Ms. Pedro's willingness to serve.
In response to Council Member Safazik's question regarding Ms. Pedro's five month residency in Puna,
she she just moved her family to the Agricultural Lots but owned the propety since 1986. Prior to that she
lived in Keaukaha. Ms. Pedro is involved with the Maku'u Farmers Association and deals with schools
regularly through workshops. They allow the schools to come to the farmers mazket, provide space for
fundraising at no charge, and hire students to work at the market. Mr. Safazik asked her whether their

group is studying the traffic in the area in the vicinity of the Maku'u Market. Ms. Pedro stated they have
been concerned about the traffic issue and have been working with the State Dept. of Transportation and
have a grant to widen the turnoff lane. Mr. Safarik wanted to ask that particulaz question because he

thinks the Maku'u market folks and Hawaiian Homelands can be the catalyst for the state to really pay
attention to what's going on at Highway 130. Mr. Safarik concluded there is a real struggle at that
highway and he supports Ms. Pedro.
Chair Pilago apologized and noted that Council Chair Higa was in attendance a long time ago and
welcomes him. Mr. Higa wanted to note that Mr. Jacobson's Committee on Health & Human Services
was supposed to convene at 10:00 a.m. and that a presenter was present from Honolulu. Committee Chair
Pilago acknowledged and apologized for the encroachment and requested everyone to keep questions
pertinent.
Your Committee on Planning is in accord with Mayor Kim's appointment of Ms. Shirley M. Pedro to the
Puna District Community Development Plan Steering Committee and recommends her confirmation.
and
AYES NOES A&E EX Respectfully submitted,
ARAKAKI X
Hlcp X COMMITTEE ON PLANNING
HOFFMANN X !
HOLSCH[IH X `_J/
IKEDA X ~~QQ~~,,J\J\
ISBELL X
awcossoN X K.
