L~6 9S AN ORDINANCE AMENDING ARTICLE VII, CHAPTER 4, OF THE HAWAII COUNTY CHARTER (2000), RELATING TO THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII: SECTION 1. Purpose. The purpose of this amendment is to change the title of the County's fire department from "Fire Department" to "Hawai`i Fire Department." The department has been known by a number of names since its formation in the late 1880's. In 1892 the island's fire fighting unit was officially titled the "Hilo Volunteer Fire Department." Since those early days, the department and its official title have continued to evolve. This proposal would adopt the name, "Hawai`i Fire Department" as the official title of the department. SECTION 2. The title of Article VII, chapter 4, of the Hawaii County Charter (2000), relating to the Fire Department, is renamed as Follows: "CHAPTER 4 HAWAII FIRE DEPARTMENT" SECTION 3. Article VII, chapter 4, section 7-4.1, of the Hawaii County Charter (2000), is amended to read as follows: "Section 7-4.1. Organization. There shall be a Hawaii fire department consisting of a fire chief, a deputy fire chief, a fire commission and the necessary staff. The fire chief shall be the administrative head of the Hawaii fire department." SECTION 4. Article VII, chapter 4, section 7-4.2, of the Hawaii County Charter (2000), is amended to read as follows: "Section 7-4.2. Statement of Policy. It is hereby declared to be the purpose of this chapter to establish in the county a system of fire protection and prevention and emergency services which shall be based on qualified and professional leadership and personnel.
