Testimony in Support of Resolution 402-06 t`405 JUL 5 R~ 1~ <br /> For: <br /> <br /> Chairman Isbell and Finance Committee Members <br /> RE: Reso. 402-06 <br /> <br /> Aloha Councilman Pilago, <br /> <br /> I am writing in support of Resolution 402-06. 1 am presently in <br /> Canada on holiday, and ask that your office submit this email as <br /> written testimony in support of your resolution. <br /> This legislation is a long time in coming, and deserves the full <br /> council's support. <br /> Although Mr. Higa feels that either it is not too much to ask West <br /> Hawaii residents to go to Hilo for testimony, or that the video <br /> conferencing system is sufficient, as a reason to vote down this <br /> resolution. As a citizen of Hawaii County for some 30 years, I <br /> disagree. <br /> In terms of the distance to Hilo, it is 250 miles round-trip. It <br /> is the same distance to Honolulu roundtrip...and you have to pass <br /> Maui, Kahoolawe, Molokai, and Lani to reach there! <br /> Would citizens of any of the other islands be asked to go such <br /> distances to be in the same room with their councilmen, look them <br /> in the eye, and give heart felt testimony affecting their lives <br /> and future generations? I say not! <br /> This would go a tong way to addressing concerns by those citizens <br /> who are calling for the creation of a West Hawaii County. Without <br /> paying attention to the rising tide of concern by West Hawaii <br /> residents to issues important to them, such as this, the Hilo side <br /> majority will surely give rise to this movement to separate. <br /> In summation, this resolution is a genuine step to address <br /> concerns by West Hawaii citizens seeking to participate in their <br /> government in the same way that East Hawaii residents now enjoy. <br /> Please vote in favor of this timely legislation. <br /> <br /> Sincerely with Aloha, <br /> /s/ Stathie J.
