Grossman To: COH Planning Committee MemlDah: 7/281106 Time: 14:52:06 Page i of 3 <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> FAX TO Planning Committee 7/28/2006 <br /> County of Hawaii 961-8912 Page 1/3 <br /> <br /> Reference Bill #305 Communication 4953 <br /> Planning Committee Meeting 7/31/2006 <br /> <br /> FROM Pat Grossman <br /> PO Box 704, Hilo, HI 96721 <br /> 732 and 728 Kalanikoa Street, Hilo, HI 96720 <br /> <br /> SUBJECT Opposition to Rezoning Request <br /> TMK: 2-2-36: 60,102, 103 <br /> <br /> Dear Planning Committee members, <br /> <br /> The concerns expressed in a fax sent to the Planning Department on March 19 (p.3), <br /> discussed in a call from Norman Higashi on April 11, and shared with members of the <br /> Planning Commission members April 30 (p.2), remain the same today. <br /> <br /> -Approximately 136 individuals will be added to the neighborhood if all 34 units are <br /> completed as planned. <br /> -The units will be in the middle of the block, not at the end of the street (Lanikaula) <br /> where the additional traffic might be better accommodated. <br /> -The proposed apartment structures will be bounded by private residences on all sides. <br /> -Planning Department staff will not require the developers to put up a six-foot chain link <br /> fence around the perimeters to mitigate egress by children and pets. <br /> <br /> The County recently featured an online article about the merits of mixed use in planning <br /> for development in the long term. No one disputes the value of best use practices in <br /> developing our land resources. This project as planned, is likely to produce day to day <br /> impacts on traffic and quality of life. And, from this perspective, these are not best use <br /> results. <br /> <br /> On Friday, May 5, four out of the five Planning Commission members rejected the re- <br /> zoning request. I oppose the request and the project as proposed.
