?Y <br /> ~ii- .S <br /> COUNTY OF HAWAII STATE OF HAWAII <br /> ••~'i'p~'wi'~` <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 4F8 ~9wi <br /> A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE REQUEST OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII <br /> FOR RELEASE OF GENERAL OBLIGATION BOND FUNDS FOR THE PLANNING, <br /> DESIGN, AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE WEST HAWAII CAMPUS CENTER <br /> DEVELOPMENTS. <br /> WHEREAS, Act 178, Session Laws of Hawaii 2005, as amended and renumbered by <br /> Act 160, Session Laws of Hawaii 2006, also cited as the Supplemental Appropriations Act of <br /> 2006, appropriated $18,207,000 for the planning, design, and construction of the Hawaii <br /> Community College's new Komohana Campus and the West Hawaii Education Center; and <br /> WHEREAS, the University of Hawaii Center at West Hawaii currently houses its <br /> programs in several leased buildings in South Kona and provides limited program offerings in <br /> West Hawaii; and <br /> WHEREAS, the current leased facilities are located in a former shopping complex which <br /> is not suitable for higher education and technical training programs; and <br /> WHEREAS, this temporazy site is distant from the West Hawaii population centers of <br /> North Kona and South Kohala; and <br /> WHEREAS, in 1991, the Board of Regents selected a 500-acre site at Kalaoa between <br /> developments in Kailua-Kona and the Kohala area; and <br /> WHEREAS, this more central location needs to be developed to meet the current and <br /> future educational needs of the West Hawaii community. <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY <br /> OF HAWAII that the Hawaii County Council supports the request of the University of <br /> <br /> Hawaii and strongly urges the Governor of the State of Hawaii to release General Obligation <br /> <br /> Bond fends for the planning, design, and construction of the West Hawaii Campus Center <br /> Developments. <br /> <br />
