If you allow the
developers to cut these culturally important features into lots, it would substantially hurt the quality of life in Hawaii
nei, both for the residents and tourists. People here have cultural ties to the heiau, have traditionally accessed
these areas for recreation, and daily admire their beauty. If developers, with the blessings of our elected officials,
carpet the land with house after house, who will want to visit Hawaii as a tourist? Many tourists who visit Kona
annually told me that they will no longer do so. It's not as pretty anymore and there's too much traffic and
pavement. They will go to other islands, not necessarily in Hawaii.
Furthermore, haven't the developers made enough money lately? I don't see the infrastructure needs of our
people being met with all the extra population here. For example, my class sizes just get bigger and bigger, some
classes are meeting in workrooms... I've even taught a class in the cafeteria and a closet in the past! I don't notice
more classrooms being built nor extra teachers. Just about every beachpark in Kona has closed its bathrooms
because the cesspools are no good. The portable toilets are just plain disgusting; what should be a temporary
situation seems to be permanant. The Hilo dump is about to explode into Kona. By the way, have you ever driven
behind one of those trailers? I'll bet the tourists and locals alike are really going to love driving behind those
aromatic behemoths! Especially in gridlock! And I happen to know developers were given permission to start
building at the bottom of Kaiminani Drive in Kona without even having a source of water, because they accosted
me and wanted to build a tank on my property where underground water exists! Isn't that getting the cart before
the horse? Where is the common sense? Fiscal responsibility? Planning? Foresight?
What people need here, what is being taken away bit by bit, is access to areas where we have traditionally
recreated. That is what you need to protect. That is what the kama'aina want. Don't worry so much about lining a
few pockets with gold. Our gold is in the open spaces, not gated communities. Please protect these open spaces,
and the tranquility and the beauty they provide for everyone.
Please respond appropriately to your constituency.
Mahalo,

Dorothy McCorriston

Comm.
