n
Nover~ 1~; 1997,
F,
14 Nowemapa 1997 -
Members of the County Council _
County of Hawaii
25 Aupuni St
Hilo, Hawaii 96720

Aloha mai,
My name is Ali'i Sir Robert C. McKeen Jr, K.C.K., Kaka'olelo ,the talking Chief of
the Royal Order of Kamehameha I from the Mamalahoa Chapter No. 2 here in Hilo.
We are of an unbroken line of successors dating back to 1865 and our founder King
Kamehameha V. We are celebrating our 90th Anniversary here in Hilo and presently
convene our meetings at Kamehameha Hall in Keaukaha which has been designated a
National Historic Site as well as a State Historic Site.
On behalf of my Ali'i Aimoku Ali'i Sir Paul K.Neves, K.C.K., our 68 members and
their `ohana we would like to voice our absolute concurrence and support for amending
Art 1, Chapter 2 of the Hawaii County code 1983(1995 Edition) to encourage the
proper use and spelling of our'olelo mal{uahine, our mother tongue. As you are well
aware the Hawaiian language is growing at a fantastic rate and our people of all
backgrounds are benefiting from this educational explosion. Hilo may already be
touted as the Hawaiian language center of the world. Here is another golden
opportunity to show your commitment. We are confident that you will recognize a
commitment to excellence that our Kupuna insisted on, by using the native language
properly. In closing may we remind each other that we do indeed share a rich heritage,
let us share it in homes, our streets, our places of worship where we recreate and more
especially in the daily business of our governing bodies.
E ola mau Ka'olelo Hawaii
Long Live the Hawaiian Language
'O Wau Ma Ka Ha'aha'a
" ' „y/ ~C'~~T'!/
Ali'i Sir Robert C.
