ra
` CIO
August 22, 2006 !
Council Chair and Council Members, : .
22 Aupuni St.
Hilo, Hi, 96720 c;

Dear Councilman Higa,
My name is Kia Kekela. I go to Hilo High School and am in the I Ph grai}e. I'm in
Mrs. Dorris "Participation in Democracy" class. Right now the class and I are discussing
the Bill 300, each student has their own opinion about the bill and this is the reason for
me writing to you. I want to share with you my opinion about the Bill 300.
To me Bill 300 from what I know is about how the state wants to ban alcohol
drinking from Hawaii's beaches. This bill was set because part of Hawaii's community
feel that alcohol at the beaches cause disruptive activity that could be prevented if alcohol
wasn't included. They also feel that alcohol at the beaches is unnecessary.
I feel that this bill is unnecessary. I'm against this bill because of the fact that I'm
around others who drink alcohol at the beach, meaning my family. To me passing this
law is going to make things worse. I also think it's kind of too late, people, I know, have
been doing this for years. It's not an everyday thing for them but maybe weekend or even
an occasional thing for them, but that's just people I know. In Hawaii I got to say that it's
not so bad that you have to ban alcohol.
I did mention early that people do that everyday and that's just their life. I think
taking that away from them can ruin it for them. They might keep doing it or they might
turn to something else like ice or other drugs that are even more dangerous. Hawaii is
known to have many drugs on the island. But I do think if people who cause problems
everyday should get consequences. It's a privilege I think and that's how others should
treat it.
So I guess what I'm trying to say is I'm against the bill but I do feel if there's
people who shouldn't do this then they alone should get punished. I don't think they
should have to punish everyone for what others do wrong. I still have mixed feelings
about this law but I believe that what I wrote is right. Please make copies and share my
letters with the other Council Members.
Sincerely,

Kia Kekela

Comm, Flo.
