I have been attending the Rural Hawai'i
Meetings recently here in Kona. Obviously, there is not yet a clear plan for the identification of
important agricultural lands by the county, and also no clear plan for designating "rural" lands. The
lands in question here, are the makai lands west of Napo'opo'o Road and certainly have a deeper soil and
would serve the community well to be left in ag. Orchards, market gardens, coffee, and other important
crops would grow well at this elevation. As we move toward a more "Sustainable Hawai'i" leaving
lands in ag in important ag areas will be of prime importance.

I am also a member of the Agricultural Working Group of the KCDP. I know that working groups are
not yet finished with their final draft of actions and objectives. I feel it is premature to be voting on such
an action as this at this time. This is also a sensitive area, this slope above the Pali of Kealakekua Bay.
The Kona Community must have adaquate time to develop their plans for both agricultural and land use
for the future. It is not the time to go ahead with this change in land use designation.

Mahalo nui for your understanding of this matter.

Aloha,

Nancy Redfeather
Kawanui Farm
Honalo, Hawai'i

comwrt IJo.
