Murashige Laura

From: Cheryl King [CKing@hawaii.rr.com] - ,
Sent: Tuesday, November 14, 2006 10:18 AM
To: counciltestimony@co.hawaii.hi.us
Cc: Fleming, Melissa c06 Pd~ It{ N 1 ( Q
Subject: Testimony in support of Resolution 464-06
Chairman Higa and Councilmembers:

I wish to voice my whole hearted support for this resolution.
Anything the council can do
to improve coverage of the local news and issues on the island would be appreciated.
I have noticed that important matters brought up before the council and other news are
sometimes not covered or are reported on selectively in West Hawaii Today, which seems to
be our only consistent source of local news. Neither the public hearing that was
switched from Kona to Hilo at the last minute nor the results of the
council meeting immediately after the earthquake were reported on recently.
Although the need to cover more pressing stories after the earthquake was cited by the WHT
editor, it is clear that our island needs additional news coverage to keep us informed and
that an additional perspective of what are or are not important news and local issues is
needed.
My husband and I moved here from Guam, which has a population similar to that of the Big
Island, where every noteworthy event was distinguished by the presence of television,
radio, and newspaper reporters. our talk radio station allowed discussion of just about
any issue or subject locals wanted to bring up, and we really knew what was going
on! Moreover, news coverage continued even after one of Guam's frequent major
disasters because the radio, television, and newspaper companies all had backup
generators.
Please vote for this resolution.
Cheryl King

Cheryl King
Kailua-Kona, Hawaii
Phone: 808-326-7016
E-Mail: Cheryl 41448@Yahoo.Com or CKing@hawaii.rr.com (preferred)

Comm.
