Murashige, Laura y
From: J. Keliipio [Josephine@poidogs.com] 4~~ 3
Sent: Wednesday, January 03, 2007 8:18 AM Cr
To: Council Testimony
Subject: COMM 32 for RESOLUTION 21-07 BIG BOX RETAILERS
Dear Council Committee on Planning,
I am in favor of Resolution 21-07 which puts a limit on BIG BOX retailers like the WAL-MART

SUPER CENTER.
Big Box retailing is actually an obsolete form of retailing that puts a heavy strain on the
communities that it moves into in the following ways:
1) It causes traff c congestion. Those huge parking lots are there to attract hundreds of cars. The
more cars that flock to these centers, the more congestion is caused on our roads. We don't need
this kind of form of retailing that jams up our road systems. Enough already!
2) It puts a toll on our landfill problem. It turns people into compulsive buyers who get caught up
in the frenzy of continuously buying more and more junk. The more junk people buy, they more
they will throw away. The more they throw away, the more it clogs our landfill. If I am not
mistaken, I believe Barbara Bell said a few year ago that the trash at the landfill increased dramatically
ever since these big box stores moved in. We need to put a stop to this form of retailing that puts a
dramatic strain on our landf Ils. Enough already!
3) It takes up a tremendous amount of space and causes people to waste a lot oftime. Big Box stores
have a habit of sprawling themselves across acres of land and thus shopping at these centers takes up
a lot of precious time. Once you park your car, you have to hike across the huge parking lot to get
into the store. Once you are in the store, you have to hike through the store to f nd the items that
you came for then hike back to pay for it at the cashiers then hike back to your car across the huge
parking lot again. The land that it swallows up in order to exist and the amount of time that it takes
to shop at these centers puts a strain on our island environment and wastes a lot of our time.
Enough already!
If Big Box stores want to be "good neighbors"then they need to transform themselves into
warehouse distribution centers, have their sales clerks at computer monitors and keyboards instead
of cash registers, take our orders for items via the Internet and provide a large fleet to delivery trucks
to deliver our ordered goods into our neighborhoods. This should help cut down on traff c
congestion, maybe make us think twice before ordering junk that we don't need, def nitely save us a
lot oftime and curb big box sprawl.
~pmm.
