Aloha Council Members: My name is Chuck Frendo. I live in Hawaiian Shores one of the neighborhoods within the greater Hawaiian Beaches Community. I am a proud member of the "Hawaiian Beaches Action Care Team". A couple weeks ago I read an article in the Tribune-Herald about Mr Gardner's plans to request rezoning to build a storage facility off of highway 130 near the Malama shopping area. My first impression was "why not, we need this type facility in our community". Last night (Jan 26 2007) I came across on N the airing of the council meeting as you were discussing Bill 220 & 221..... when it was done my impression had changed from "why not" to "Hell Yes" and if given the opportunity I'd do whatever I could to assist Mr Gardner in his efforts. My councilperson Emily Naeole's comments concerning our communities need were to the point and without the pomposity and arrogance of others claiming to protect the "General Plan". The General Plan is just that, dealing in generalities. We all know one size does not fit all, Mr Gardner's plan needs "specific" attention and that's why he is in front of all of you, give him a chance. Address Phone 9 6. - ~ a ~ January 27, 2007 Emily Naeole Hawaii County Council Deaz Mrs. Naeole: Ref: Bills 220 and 221 This letter presents my decision to support these bills and the rationale supporting that position. My home is in Hawaiian Paradise Pazk, and Pahoa is the neazest town with shops and restaurants. I attended the Hawaii County Council meeting of January 4 where residents expressed their opinions about these bills. Many of the comments showed resistance to change, any kind of change. These people are reclusives found in any community. Fortunately, the rest of us understand that change is inevitable. Others were fearful of traffic problems. Yet the fire station will also be located neazby, and the Applicant will provide funds for adjustments to Highway 130 to provide access to his property. The nearby intersection already shows development, with the Malama Market center and another shopping facility under construction. The intersection will continue to grow and encompass the proposed storage facility, together with PACE and Huli Huli and other future shopping and eating facilities. The proposed facility will provide a needed storage capability that will benefit people living in the vicinity of Pahoa, a service that is not now available. I live in Hawaiian Paradise Park and Pahoa is my nearest shopping center. We frequently buy food at the Malama Market, hazdwaze from the same shopping center, and, of course, we eat at Luquin's and the Pahoa Village Cafe. Regardless of the pros and cons about this storage facility, in my opinion it will provide abadly-needed place that is not otherwise available. As people continue to move into Puna they desperately need a temporary storage facility for their household goods until they are able to move into a house. And again where they may move from a rental into a purchased home. I certainly hope this facility will be approved. Anna M. As elderly members of the community, we believe that Bills 220 and 221 represent an effort to fill a need in our area. Many of us have a lifetime collection of furniture and keepsakes. Presently we would have to drive to Hilo to find a safe and dry storage facility for the items that are not kept in our homes. Please advise the other council members that we need their support to make our lives better by having a local storage facility which can be easily reached by the citizens in District 5.
