Kau President Kamehameha Investment Corporation 567 South King Street, Suite 120 Honolulu, Hawaii 96813-3036 Dear Mr. Kau: At meetings with representatives of KIC in January 1998, it was agreed that your group is interested in working with members of our community to establish a foundation where we can all work together to address many concerns we have with KIC's proposed rezoning for 281 acres from Ag to Urban. To date, our concerns regarding traffic, sewer, infrastructure, cultural and social impacts have not been met. Therefore, we cannot endorse KIC's application until the Kona community is confident that mitigation measures are in place. On Wednesday, February 25, 1998, the board of directors of the Kona Hawaiian Civic Club created an ad hoc committee to work on this issue with KIC, the community and government bodies. We would like to arrange our first planning meeting with you and your representative as soon as possible; however, due to your busy schedule we will await your response and arrange a time convenient for you. Additionally, please advise if you wish to appoint a member to represent KIC or Bishop Estate on this five-member ad hoc committee. I was informed by the County Planning Department that your application will be on their agenda for a hearing scheduled on Thursday, March 5, 1998. I doubt that your group or ours will be able to meet by that date, so we are requesting that the Planning Committee of the Hawaii County Council defer their decision once more to allow us the opportunity to work out these concerns.
