Rick Robinson, Kamehameha
Schools Bishop Estates (KSBE) Hawaii Island Land Manager, to clarify two issues that have
arisen in the course of public hearings regarding Kamehameha Investment Corporation's (KIC)
rezoning of Land Area 53 in Kahalu'u: (I) What is the status ofthe Kona Lagoon, and (2) Is
there a maintenance and security program for the Kona Lagoon during its down time?
On the first question, Mr. Robinson indicated that KSBE is currently seeking to enter into an
agreement with a Hotelier. There are two parties who are fmancially substantial and interested in
the Kona Lagoon as a hotel. This is good news!
Regarding the second question, Mr. Robinson stated that KSBE has an ongoing maintenance
program that includes monthly landscape work, supplemented by daily security to protect against
vandalism. KIC is the landscape contractor and Freeman Guards is the security contractor.
On the broader scope, KIC's request to rezone Land Area 53 is linked to a repositioning of
Keauhou Resort as a whole . The eminent refurbislunent of all three hotels will invariably
trigger market demand for additional residential units and the development of new hotel
properties. This, of course, is good for the community and our common interest to ensure a
strong economic base for the Big Island.
I hope this information is helpful.
Very truly yours,
t ~S, ~5
Francis N.
