Box 472
Na'alehu, Hawaz i 96772
Dear Ms. Hanoa,
Thank you very much for meeting with me on Februazy 22 to provide an update
on the efforts to protect the sacred lands of Ka u. I was very pleased to heaz of the
progress you and your colleagues have been making.
I believe that the Ka u coastline is one of Hawai'i's great treasures, due to both its
natural beauty as well as its cultural significance. The coastline, as well as the Ahupua'a
of Punalu'u, need to be preserved for the sake of future generations, so they too may
enjoy Ka'u's natural resources and perpetuate the heritage of the land.
In this regazd, I was glad to heaz of your concept of turning the azea into a "living
classroom," where students of all ages may leazn about history, culture, customs,
traditions, and the ecosystem. The fact that this will also provide needed jobs for local
residents is yet another positive. I encourage you to continue your efforts of bringing all
parties together, including government and the private sector, to help realize this worthy
goal.
If there is anything I can do to help, please do not hesitate to let me know.
Very truly yours,
CALVIN K.Y.
