I am writing this a-mail to urge you to reconsider making such a proposal.
There is a great deal of opposition to your intended bill which usurps many of the choices before the Kau'
community. The bill would preempt the Sea Mountain 5 development of Punalu'u before citizens of Kau' have
had a fair chance to evaluate it. According to the Herald Tribune the Bill would kill this project .
The residents of Kau' know that it is folly to tie up primary resources in ways that will produce nothing that
could not be gained in more cost effective ways. Sea Mountain 5 has made generous overtures to the
community and has shown a willingness to work with individuals here. They will donate what your bill would
cost the taxpayers millions of dollars to buy.
For many years the choices made for Kau have been dictated by a band of radical activists, Kau'
Preservation. They call themselves environmentalists. But, good government policy and good environmental
policy considers the organic whole of the community and all its people. I respectfully suggest that this is your
job as the Council representative for Kau'. There is no such consideration in this bill.
Kau' deserves to be allowed to make choices and it deserves the right to bring back its economy so that its
hospital has the equipment and personnel it needs, its schools are no longer the worst in Hawaii, its people
have local jobs and are no longer the poorest in the state, its police and fire are adequate to the job that needs
to be done.
After years of complacency, Kau' residents are awakening and are gaining a voice to be listened to and heard.
They are no longer willing to have critical decisions made for them.
Your bill must be withdrawn so that the residents of Kau' will have the opportunity to decide how their land's
primary economic asset, will be used or not used.
Sincerely,
Mary C.
