.1'" °
February 17, 1998
County Council
County of Hawaii
25 Aupuni St.
Hilo, Hawaii 96720
Subject: Peddling at Waipio Valley Lookout
Dear Council Members,
As a property owner at 48-5516 Waipio Road, Waipio Valley Lookout
I am strongly for permanently banning all peddlars at tie
Valley Lookout.
First of f, Waipio Valley is one obi the Big Island's treasures
and as a visitor and local destination it is second only
to the Volcano National Park.
Like our beaches we have to guard our heritage aisld let the
children and our visitors know that we are proud yet protective
of our past.
Secondly I am greatly disturbed by a permitting process that
allows a residential area to be turned into a carnival type
atmosphere with little or no regard to the surrounding
property owners. The commercial tour agencies have regulated
themselves and operate 500 yards back from the overlook in
the town of K}}~~ku~ haele where there is commercial zoning. If
it werent fofiat~he`"'i/ast Chance Store and the Waipio Valley
Artworks I dont know what we would do.
At my house because of traffic congestion I consistently have
people parking on my lawn and partially blocking my driveway.
This bothers me but I understand that the parking at the over-
look is extremely limited and that there is no room left
for additional parking.
My neighbors the Rice's were forced to erect a chain link
fence to keep the peddlars off their property and this is
a neighborhood where we normally do not lock our doors.
Above all, we, (you and I~, are charged with the responsibility
to preserve the beauty and view of Waipio Valley. Please do
not take your responsibility lightly. PLEASE BAN ALL PEDDLING
AT//WA/IPIO VALLEY LOOKOUT.
Alan H.
