I am an
alumni of the University of Minnesota Duluth under the instruction of Mike Sunnafrank. I
came to the islands in January of 2006. I currently live in Minnesota, but I will never
forget my experiences in Punalu'u and Ka'u. When I return in the future, I am hoping that
the land is preserved with the native culture and traditions.
From my own personal experience, meeting and talking with the local people in Punalu'u
gave our group new insight on life and much inspiration. Their culture, life style and
traditions taught us lessons that no classroom could bring. They are not living to work
--they are working to live. They represent people with priorities of family, friends, and
loyalty to their native culture. Please do not take this away by developing their land.
The jobs provided by construction would not help out our friends. Their culture will
diminish and no longer exist.
There are many alternatives that you can choose to keep from destroying this precious
land. Please reconsider your development.
Thank you,
Talia Carpenter
This message was sent using IMP, the Internet Messaging Program.
Comm.
