Visits to Punalu'u over the years, alone and with friends and family, have

provided much pleasure and respite.
The natural beauty and powerful energy experienced there is unique in all the world.
So it is with intense emotion that I write to the Hawaii County Council to say that I feel
the commercial development of the Punaluu area into expensive homes, condominiums and
resort property is extremely ill conceived. The land and its resources are many times more

valuable as a cultural and environmental asset to the Hawaii Island community. An
abundance of natural and indigenous uses would benefit the entire economy of Hawaii Island
as well as those local families living in the Punalu'u and Ka'u region. i believe this-is
a more important consideration than catering to the small, privileged group of individuals
who can afford the luxury accommodations now proposed for Punalu'u by mainland developers.
I ask for the Hawaii County Council's support of Hawaii_ County Resolution 169-07 to
protect critical habitat and sacred sites at Punalu'u - one of the last beaches in Hawaii
not developed into a massive luxury housing development and resort. This important space
provides families in Ka'u with income, an invaluable, sustainable food source (For
example, coffee grown in the Ka'u district recently won an important award for its
excellence.) and a significant and vital family recreation area that is the only public
beach in Ka'u.
Please add my name to the growing list of people against development at Punalu'u!
*Sincerely,
* Ira Ono, Founder
Volcano Garden Arts
19-3438 01d Volcano Road
Volcano, Hawaii 96765*
(808) 967-7261
iraono@hawaii.rr.com <mailto:iraono@hawaii.rr.com>
Comm.
