Jun 29 07 09:09p Kahuku Farms 808 939 8500 p.2
Randall Mitchell ,T1,/L Q
Leigh Mitchell ~ ( ilt+~ ~ u C
Cazol}v Mitchell
Kately n Mitchell
PO Box 6871 '
1~ -
Ocean View, Hawaii 96737
Councilmember Jacobsen and Hawaii County Council Members,
This letter is to inform you of the desires of this household as they relate to the
preservation of Punaluu by it being included in a larger county park owned by the county. We
are fo r the acquisition of larger park to protect this area from resort development. As a
family we represent 3 generations who have seen the way coastal resort development can
diminish and destroy a coast line. We have witnessed the development of Southern California,
Maui, Kauai and the Big Island and the only way to protect the land is to lock it up in the state,
the co~mty or the federal government hands permanently to be administered as parks or
recreation areas run by people who do not have short term financial gain as their motive.
Randall has a background in marine biology and natural history and is a social worker in
the Kz.u District, Leigh is an educator who works with the children of Kau, and Carolyn spent
her lif, in the service children. Katelyn is a student raised in Kau whose fast experiences in the
natural world include days on the shoreline at Punaluu, running the black sand through her hands
and witching for turtle heads lifring out of the water. This treasure needs to be protected-
We will attend the meeting in Naalehu on the 5"' to voice our opinion. We will bring with
us not so much the experiences of our 17 years in Kau but our memories of the beautiful coast
lines cf Southem California ruined by coastal development, The tragedy of what happened to
Maui' ~ shorelines with it's rampant resort development, the locking down of public coastal
access on the Kau Coast at Pohue bay. It needs to be stopped here and now.
Randall Mitchell
Leigh Mitchell
Carol}~n Mitchell
Katel} n Mitche[1
Faxed the 29`" day of June, 2007
coptttt. lam. 3~9.75~
Ref.
