L <br /> Re: Federal Funcing for Punalu`u <br /> Dear Chairperson Yagong: <br /> ='3 <br /> Thank you for the opportunity to address the Finance Committee this morning regarding r-+ <br /> Resolution 169-07. Your courtesy and that of your committee is truly appreciated. <br /> - <br /> After returning to my office, I attempted to contact Congresswoman Mazie Hirano about the <br /> federal funds she is proposing for the acquisition of Punalu`u. Unfortunately, she is traveling <br /> back to Washington, D.C. today and is not available by telephone. I did speak with Caz] <br /> Takamura, her Chief of Staff, who was with her when we met earlier this year and discussed <br /> the situation at Ptutalu`Ir, and then accompanied her on her site visit after our meeting. <br /> Mr. Takamura told me hat Congress is now working on finalizing the budget. <br /> Congresswoman Hirano has put In a request for the $3 million mentioned by Mr. Jacobson <br /> and vidll be fighting for it during the budget deliberations. She will continue to fight for-the <br /> funds whether or not the Council passes this resolution, and what the Council does will not <br /> jeopardize the funding. <br /> What Mr. Takamura emphasized, and I did not know before talking to him today, was that <br /> when she met with people at Punalu`u, she emphasized to them her support for the mediation <br /> efforts that we had talked about at our meeting and encouraged their participation. Mr. <br /> Takalnura stated to me today that Congresswoman Hirano fully supports the idea of mediation <br /> to bring together the different factions and to come to a sense of what would be acceptable to <br /> the community. <br /> I hope this information is helpful.
