To Hawaii County Council Committee on Planning
The Honorable K. Angel Pilago, Chair
The Honorable Dominic Yagong, Vice-Chair

From Louis Doody
Committee Date: Tuesday September 18, 2007, 1:00 P.M.
Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort and Spa
Re: Council Bill 176 Establishing a Hawaii County
Cultural Resources Commission
I am a relatively recent resident of Hawaii, a registered voter, and one
interested in the rich historical chazacter of this island. Of all the islands of
Hawaii that I am familiar with, it is the Big Island that impresses me most as a
repository of important historical and archaeological sites.
Visitors to Hawaii are eager not only to spend their days enjoying the
excellent weather and beaches that it offers. They also want a taste of the history,
from the times when Hawaiian kings and alii ruled, to the arrival of outsiders in
sailing ships and the last days of the monarchy. It is no accident that so many
plazas, hotels, resorts and other present-day sites are named after kings, queens,
princes and princesses: their owners know what captures the attention of visitors
and residents alike.
Hawaii should follow the example of Maui and Kauai and establish a
commission that will focus on the preservation of the ancient heritage of the
island for the benefit of educating its children today and tomorrow. Such a
commission would also be a means to guazantee a balanced approach that will
save irreplaceable historic sites while permitting sensible growth. A Hawaii
County Cultural Resources Commission with adequate staffing will enhance both
the cultural and commercial value of the land far into the future.
Sincerely yours,
Louis P.
