Pahualiikoaokaawaloa
Kulana Huli Honua
Foundation of the Search for Wisdom
e NomProf4 501-C1 Orgatization
Mikahala Roy, Executive Director

Members of Hawaii County Council
Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort, Kona

9/19/07

Distinguished Council Members:

Kulana Huli Honua wholeheartedly supports the strong efforts of Pele Hanoa and the Ka'u

Preservation in their work to preserve Punalu'u and the greater Ka'u area for generations to come.

Aunty Pele, her family and members of this organization are to be congratulated on their

thorough and effective efforts to protect Punalu'u and Ka'u. They continually serve to educate

and enlighten the world about a place that may be found only here - Pttnalu'u - in Ka'u, Hawaii.
By the words of the late Edith Kanaka'ole, we know that Ka'u is shortened from another word.

The root word is Ka'umauma, meaning "breast" or "feeder". Ka'u, then, is the "feeder" to all

other lands here on Hawaii. The name gives respect to Ka'u's vast and long history highlighted
by the arrival of waves of the people, the family of `Oiwi, who arrived from elsewhere in the
great Pacific.
Such old lands deserve to heaz their fnst peoples. The fnst people deserve to be honored,
respected and cared for by a government who stole the lands of Hawaii, deposing her majesty
Queen Lili'uokahmi. Almost 115 years Iater, detrimental effects of that overthrow are still being
felt. Poverty and joblessness for `O'iwi in Ka'u and elsewhere exist too prominently. Has James
Kent & Associates existed in Hawaii long enough to study the detrimental effects spoken of here?

It is one thing to do survey studies of present populations, it is entirely another to uphold the laws
created to protect the Hawaiian people and their ancestral homeland.
The answers lie not in promoting a lifestyle foreign to this land, but are in creating and working
hard to build industries to enhance the land and provide employment, satisfaction and restored

respect to the people. Please vote in favor of Councilman Jacobson's resolution that will allow

the County to purchase Punalu'u and the surrounding 156 acres.

The land and her people deserve wise leadership that assures the well-being of the land and her
first people for generations to come. This is the charge you inherited - do your very best. E

malama is Punalu'u; a malama is Ka'u, a malama is Hawaii.
`O Wau tho I Ke Aloha
Mika
Roy ideni
cant. r>o. 3 t[.q' • 9 u
Ref. 7o:hr~MD .D`int'`
Ref.
