Hawaii Tribune-Herald Hilo, Hawaii Page 2 of 2
Drinking Station, Aunty Yong's Sports Bar, Paradise Bar and Grill, Shooters Bar and Grill, and Uncle
Mikey's Video Dance Club.
~ West Hawaii establishments that will have the sensors include the Hard Rock Cafe Kona, Hooters,
Jackie Rey's Ohana Grill, Lulu's Nightclub, Ocean's Sports Bar and Grill, Senor Billy's Cantina and Sushi
Shiono.
The county has 30 of the devices, which cost about $25, Murai said. They are putting them in
bathrooms of establishments that provide free soft drinks to designated drivers.
"We hope they don't steal them," Murai said. Of course, the deterrent is obvious no one wants to fish
something out of a public urinal.
"I think it will get them talking about it," she said. "I think it will create some conversation, and get
them thinking about designated drivers. We do want to make the public aware."
Murai said they are distributing the sensors in time for Labor Day. She said the police department
doesn't want to see anyone hurt during the holiday.
"A lot of people do drink at home or at the beach or at parties, it's not just at the bar," she said, adding
people are sometimes not aware of the consequences of drinking and driving, clinging to the "it won't
happen to me," mentality.
Hawaii County Police Sgt. Dexter Veriato urged peu~le to be safe this holiday weekend.
"We are concerned with the number of people on the road," Veriato said. "They have parties, they go
the beach, they have family and friends over. Traditionally, people in Hawaii celebrate the Labor Day
weekend. There is a lot of alcohol consumption."
Terrie Henderson can be reached at thendersonC~hrvaiitribune-herald.com.
AlI rights reserved.
