I have been farming for 28 years in Kurtistown and
harvest taro leaves and root on a weekly basis. On our Malu 'Aina farm we have more than 30 varieties of kalo.

For me, the kalo is sacred. It should be respected. It is a connection to the very essence of life. In my view kalo
should not be reduced to a mere commodity to be genetically modified, manipulated, and patented for profit. In
my view genetic modification reflects an arrogance of science over the sacred. I believe such arrogance has
brought our world to the point of global crisis.
I believe the way out of our global crisis is to return to humility, malama the kalo and the aina and reconnect with
our spiritual roots and that which is sacred.
Jim Albertini
Malu 'Aina Center For Non-violent Education & Action
P.O.
