B. 1577 H. D. 1 to Temporarily Prohibit the Growing of Genetically Modified
Coffee for a Period of Five Years, and at the Same Time, Permit Research in an Environmentally Secure
Facility. {Urges the Hawaii State Legislature to pass H. B. 1577 H. D. 1, however, does not support
locating the research facility within the County of Hawal and EMC-12."
Honorable Chair and Members of the Hawaii Island County Council,

Aloha Kakou.

My name is Chris Kobayashi, a third generation taro, fruit and vegetable farmer
from the island of Kauai. Over 50 years ago, my grandmother planted coffee
trees on our property which our family has farmed for over 80 years.

I would like to ask you to please support this Coffee Resolution on behalf of the
many coffee farmers. It would be a tragedy if Kona Coffee got contaminated by
GMO coffee. There is a perception that Kona Coffee is a pure Hawaiian coffee.
That perception includes, No GMO. Please support the coffee growers so that
they can remain sustainable and command top prices for their coffee.

Mahalo nui loa.

Aloha,

Chris Kobayashi
P.O.Box 135
Hanalei, Kauai, Hawaii 96714
