REPORT OF THE <br /> COMMITTEE ON PUBLIC SAFETY <br /> AND PARKS AND RECREATION <br /> <br /> DATE: January 23, 2008 RE: Communication No. 931/Resolution 490-08 <br /> <br /> PLACE: Council Chambers <br /> Ben Franklin Bldg., 2nd Floor <br /> 333 Kilauea Avenue <br /> Hilo, Hawaii <br /> <br /> TIME: 1:45 p.m. <br /> <br /> Council Chair and Members <br /> Hawaii County Council <br /> Hilo, Hawaii 96720 <br /> Your Committee on Public Safety and Parks and Recreation, to which was referred <br /> Communication No. 931, regarding Resolution No. 490-08, reports as follows: <br /> Resolution No. 490-08, in support of the establishment of a volunteer fire company and unit within <br /> the Kanekoa Subdivision of the South Kohala District, was transmitted by Council Chair <br /> Pete Hoffmann, via Communication No. 931, dated January 8, 2008. <br /> Fire Chief Darryl Oliveira spoke before your Committee, stating that the area is prone to fires. <br /> Chief Oliveira further stated that there is a great need to protect areas where urban and agricultural <br /> lands interface. <br /> Chief Oliveira informed your Committee of the basic requirements for the establishment of a <br /> volunteer fire department: 1) community must request; 2) requires commitment from 6 - 12 <br /> members of the community who have the necessary physical and academic capacity; 3) those <br /> individuals must guarantee a three week-end training commitment; 4) equipment must be issued, at <br /> a cost of approximately three to four thousand dollars per volunteer; and 5) there must be a <br /> residence where the equipment can be housed. <br /> Your Committee on Public Safety and Parks and Recreation is in accord with the purpose of <br /> Resolution 490-08, and recommends its adoption. <br /> awm <br /> AYES NOES A&E EX Respectfully submitted, <br /> FORD X <br /> HIGA X COMMITTEE ON PUBLIC SAFETY <br /> HOFFMANN X AND PARKS AND RECREATION <br /> IKEDA X ~ ~(l~ /J~ <br /> JACOBSON X L/lS~~ ~f' <br /> NAEOLE X DONALD IKEDA, CHAIR <br /> PILAGO X PSPRC REPORT NO. _ 13 <br /> YAGONG x FEB D 6 2008 <br /> YOSHIMOTO X ADOPTED: <br /> <br />
