Murashige, Laura

From: Alice Silbanuz [alice.silbanuz@doh.hawaii.gov]. ~r.t,
Sent: Tuesday, February 19, 2008 4:08 PM ~"k -
To: counciltestimony@co.hawaii.hi.us
Subject: Please vote to support Bill 224. 2008 FEB 20 AM 8 36
To: Hawai?i County Council~T~;
Re: TESTIMONY IN SUPPORT OF BILL 224
Relating To Prohibition of Smoking In Certain Places Council hearing: February 21, 2008

I strongly support Bill 224, which would prohibit using tobacco products at all Hawai'i
County parks and beaches.
As you know, smoking is hazardous to health. Two years ago our State passed a smoke-free
law covering all workplaces in Hawaii. However, smoking is still permitted in nearly all
parks and beach parks within the State, including the Big Island. Our keiki continue to be
exposed to the hazards of secondhand smoke.
Additionally, discarding cigarettes and cigar butts onto our beaches is unsightly, unclean
and particularly hazardous to small children who handle and sometime ingest them. What
message are we sending our children when their places of play are polluted with smoke and
the trash from dropped butts? Children and families deserve clean, healthy places to
enjoy outdoor activities.
I strongly encourage the Council to vote yes to pass Bill 224. Last year, Kahalu?u Beach
Park in Kona went smoke free, let?s do the same for the rest of the Island. Passing Bill
224, will make visiting all our parks and beaches more enjoyable.
Please accept this as written testimony in support of this bill.
Sincerely,
Alice Silbanuz
1999 Graduate of UH-Hilo

Alice Silbanuz
99-1028 Kahua Place
Honolulu, HI 96701
808-586-4434

1
