In my position as the Senior Program Coordinator for the <br /> Hilo, HI 96720 American Lun Assoication of Hawaii, I stron I see the benefits of the intent <br /> Fax:{808)935-7474 g g y <br /> Phone: (808) 935-1206 of Bill 224, which would prohibit use of tobacco products at all County of <br /> Hawaii parks and beaches, effectively providing a clean and healthy <br /> environment for Hawaii's keiki, ohana, visitors and wildlife. <br /> Website: <br /> www.ala-hawaii.org The mission of the American Lung Association of Hawaii is to reduce lung <br /> disease and improve lung health; Bill 224 would strongly assist us in <br /> e-Mail: accomplishing our mission. The ALA of Hawaii provides the only pediatric <br /> lung(o~ala-hawaii.org school-based asthma education program as well as school-based tobacco <br /> education and prevention and tobacco cessation program for teens. <br /> We have just completed two teen Not On Tobacco programs, one at Hilo High <br /> and the other at Waiakea High with a total of 10 graduates. These youth have <br /> made a commitment to quit smoking and their haven is the beach. They want <br /> to quit smoking to save their lives and regain lung health. One of their main <br /> coping strategy's to help them through withdrawals is surfing. l plead with <br /> you on behalf of these youth and the 25+ youth still in the N-O-T <br /> program, at Goodwill Industries and Kua O Ka La PCS in Pohiki, make <br /> our beaches and parks tobacco free! <br /> As this bill moves forward, stand with the community and keep the bill intact <br /> with a complete ban on all parks, beaches and county facilities. We are an <br /> outdoors community and we all look forward to the trade wind weather when <br /> we can take our families to the beach or park. Our youth play golf and go to <br /> drag races. It is our duty to guarantee them clean air fo breathe. <br /> In closing, the public's health should be protected wherever possible, including <br /> when You Can': while enjoying Hawai'i's parks, beaches, and county facilities.
