Petition to change Bill 224

Changing the smoking bill to include a smoking area

On April 22, 2008, the County Council will be hearing Bill 224, which the Mayor vetoed. As the Mayor
stated in his veto letter to the Council, "I find it very impractical and unfair to pass a law that would
totally ban smoking without providing a designated smoking area..."
If the Council passes a law that includes a designated smoking area for parks and beaches. smokers
would not feel as if their rights are violated. Why?

• Parks and beaches are NOT enclosed areas; Respectful people, as most smokers are, currently
exercise consideration for others. It works. Disrespectful people will not follow a new law. Period.

• Influencing keiki; There is zero evidence that children of smokers smoke too. In fact, it has been our
experience that the opposite holds true.

As law-abiding, dedicated citizens of Hawaii County, we vigorously oppose Bill 224. It is beyond
unreasonable and quite frankly unfair to completely ban smoking with no consideration for designated
smoking areas. Smoking tobacco is legal. As smokers, we deserve fair and equal treatment. As non-
smokers, we respect the right of those who choose to smoke with aloha.

NAME SIGNATURE SMOKER

t~b" Q- H -a
atn 216;1
(

/V

ur~A V,,q&NA 00

s ~ ~-L
U
tt L__

V c

Page I
