F <

Dear Mr. Chung:

I am writing on behalf of the Honl's Beach Association to express our support of
resolution no. 279-98 asking the mayor to acquire the shoreline property at
Wai'aha Bay in Kailua-Kona.
Kona is growing at an astounding rate and the need to preserve open spaces along Ali i
drive and create more parks is essential in maintaining the unique character and charm
of Kailua-Kona Village. With proper planning, the shoreline area between Kailua and
Keauhou can remain attractive and accessible for years to come. At present, no beach
parks or recreational facilities exist within the four-mile stretch between Kailua pier and
Pahoehoe Park, a heavily pedestrian-trafficked section of town.
The .68 acre shoreline parcel in question, which consists primarily of white sand beach,
should not be ex lofted as a condominium development, but should be preserved as a
public beach park. The acquisition of this property by the County would be of great
benefit to residents and tourists alike.
Resolution HSCR 857-98 adopted this year by the Hawaii State Legislature requests
that the Department of Land and Natural Resources, the Coastal Zone Management
Program and various other federal agencies plan and implement beach restoration and
nourishment projects in Hawaii.
The beach at Wai'aha has shown strong signs of accretion since the seawall built in the
early 60's has been washed away by high waves over the last three to four years. This
beach is a perfect candidate for a small-scale beach restoration project. If the County
would acquire the property, the community could then start the restoration process at a
minimal cost as we have commitments from various contractors and community groups
to assist with such a project.
Please support resolution no. 279-98.
Sincerely,

IL ~o v
Michael L.
